Massachusetts Institute of Technology takes the crown for the first time.

The ninth annual QS World University Rankings® sees the Massachusetts Institute of Technology take the crown for the first time, propelled by superior citation rates and student/faculty ratio, alongside an increase in international faculty.

Harvard University, which topped the table every year between 2004 and 2009, slips to third, behind the UK’s University of Cambridge. MIT has risen steadily up the rankings from 10th in 2007.

“The rise of MIT coincides with a global shift in emphasis toward science and technology,” says QS head of research Ben Sowter. “MIT perfects a blueprint that is now being followed by a new wave of cutting-edge tech-focused institutions, especially in Asia.”

The only Bulgarian university ranked by the Qs World University Rankings®, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski", keeps its position in the rankings this year, despite low state investments in higher-education and proving once again its reputation in teaching and research.

QS head of research Ben Sowter states: “The unprecedented acceleration in international recruitment reflects an escalating global battle for talent. 120,000 more international students were reported by the top 500 universities this year, suggesting the global total may now exceed 4 million”.

The fact that Bulgaria produces competitive students is proved also by the number of top international universities coming to recruit students for their masters or PhD programs. For example, this year, top universities such as London School of Economics, University of Kent, University of Reading, King's College London, WU Vienna, University of Economics and Business and EDHEC Business School, travel to Sofia to meet Bulgarian graduates at the QS World Grad School Tour, on the 11th of October. 2012 is the ninth year that QS has published its World University Rankings®, which have become established as the most widely read university comparison of their kind. They are based on six indicators and were this year compiled following surveys of over 46,000 academics and 28,000 employers, the largest of their kind ever conducted.
